M.Sc. in Applied Computing and Information Technology



Course No.: CT502

Candidates will conduct research for the M.Sc. Degree (Mode 1) under the supervision of the Head of the Department of Information Technology or other member of academic staff, who may act as Research Director for the purposes of the degree. Candidates may be advised by their Research Director to undertake a small number of formal courses that will support the thrust of their research activities. The examination for Mode I will be based primarily on the quality of the research and Major Dissertation presented by students, but course examination results may also be taken into account.

Candidates for the M.Sc. Degree (Mode 111) will pursue a course of relevant lectures (amounting to 300 - 400 hours and will also be required to undertake research leading to a Minor Dissertation.

Objectives of the Course

The course is intended to equip Computing (or related Information Technology) graduates with an opportunity to:

1. Study advanced methods and topics in the science of Information Technology;
and
2. Specialise in particular aspects of Information Technology, including Software
Engineering, Industrial Applications, Manufacturing Systems, Business Systems, etc.
The programme will develop research of a primarily applied nature.

Entry Requirements

The course is open to candidates who have obtained a First or Second Class Honours degree in Computing or related Information Technology discipline. The programme will be open to both new graduates and to those with industrial/business experience.

Places available

There is a limitation on the number of places available.

Duration

Candidates may pursue the course on a fulltime basis and complete the programme in 20 months. Candidates who are currently in fulltime employment may elect for a part-time programme, and will normally be expected to complete within 2 years (Max. 36 months).

Course Structure

The programme will consist of three elements:

(i) formal course work.

(ii) practical assignments and term papers, and

(iii)a major research project and dissertation.
