research / Computing in Society

The prevalence and influence of computing in our society provides us with both challenges and opportunities. We are researching the impacts of new technologies on our lives, the issues raised, and how we best might exploit our technical resources to contribute positively to society. The area requires a multi-disciplinary approach and our team have backgrounds in computing, education, business, languages, psychology, archaeology, and geography.

Current research topics include:

·   E-Learning: technologies available to help students achieve academic success

·   Collaborative virtual environments: creation of virtual classrooms, virtual meeting places, etc.

·    Human Computer Interaction and related issues

·    Computer programming: what skills and backgrounds contribute to success in the field

·     Gender roles in computing: participation of women in computing, both academic and in the workplace

·   Computer support for knowledge work: study of organisational memory systems

·    IT education: investigating appropriate pedagogies for IT education

Currently, the group consists of Pat Byrne, Karen Young, Sharon Flynn and Sam Redfern, but we also collaborate with other groups in the department.
